Grub Control

Grubs are one of the biggest threats to the health of your lawn. Not only do grubs destroy the roots of your grass, but they also attract predators, such as moles, skunks, raccoons, and birds, that create additional damage by digging up your lawn to look for grubs to eat. A grub infestation can destroy even the healthiest landscape in a matter of weeks. Protect your lawn with grub control services from Riedel's Garden Center.

Grubs are the larvae of beetles. The grubs awaken in the spring and feed on grass roots until they change into pupae.  In the summer the pupae turn into adult beetles, which then lay up to 60 eggs in two to three weeks. In the fall these eggs turn into new grubs that start the destructive cycle all over again. Adult beetles can live anywhere from 1 to 7 years, so you can see how a few beetles can easily turn into a major grub infestation.

There are a few signs that can indicate your lawn is suffering from grub damage:

• Your lawn has brown patches that never turn green.
• Birds, skunks, moles, raccoons, or other predators are tearing up your lawn.
• Your turf is loose and easy to lift from the soil.
• Your turf is spongy.

If you notice any of these signs, your lawn may have a grub infestation that requires grub control. To check, cut a patch of sod that is one square foot and two to four inches deep from an area that is showing indications of grub damage. Pull it back to see how many grubs you find. While a few grubs are likely not a problem, if you find more than six, your lawn needs grub control services.

To prevent a grub infestation from developing, we use a preventative grub control product. This should be applied in the late spring or early summer. This preventative application will not be effective if you already have grubs in your lawn. In that case, a curative insecticide is needed. Once your grub infestation has been remedied, we recommend annual grub control treatments twice a year to keep the grubs at bay. We recommend the preventative grub control treatment in the spring followed by a second control application in the late summer or early fall when any newly hatched grubs are feeding.
