A thick, healthy lawn not only looks good, but it is also the best defense against weeds, insects, and lawn diseases. But over time, grass plants reach their peak and growth slow down, leaving you with thin, sparse grass. Foot traffic, a lack of water, heat, and pet waste can all accelerate the breakdown process. If your lawn is starting to look sparse or brown, Riedel's Garden Center’s lawn overseeding service may be the answer.

Lawn overseeding, also called reseeding, is the process of planting grass seed directly into existing grass. It is most often used to fill in thinning or bare spots and high traffic areas as well as treat brown or discolored areas. It can also be used to establish improved, more robust grass varieties into your lawn. Lawn overseeding improves the density of your grass, which protects it against insects, weeds, diseases, drought, shade, and wear and tear from foot traffic. Not only does a dense lawn look healthier and lusher, but it also requires less water, fertilizer, and pesticides.

Successful lawn overseeding requires some expertise. You need to know the best type of turf grass seed to use, how much to use, and when the best time is to over-seed a yard. Lawn overseeding should be done at least every three to four years, but annually is ideal, especially during drought conditions, which is something Hays, Kansas residents know all too well. While lawn overseeding can be done at any time during the year, the best time is in the fall after the lawn has been aerated and dethatched so that the new grass can be established before cold weather sets in.

As part of Riedel's Garden Center’s lawn overseeding service, our lawn care experts will start by dethatching and slicing your lawn. This allows the better seed to soil contact and improves germination rates. Next, we overseed your lawn, selecting the appropriate turf grass seed based on your existing grass and soil condition. Whether you need to over-seed your entire lawn or just a few bare areas, our lawn overseeding service will reinvigorate your lawn and bring it back to its former splendor.
